A BRIEF HISTORY OF HOLY TRINITY QUASI PARISH WUM.
As Wum town began to expand St Martin's Mission was getting too distant for the increasing Christian population in the stranger area at Three Corners and beyond. The Christians there amongst them dynamic Alexander Buh Chia (RIP), Ambrose Kum (RIP), Peter Iro Kalu now returned to Nigeria, Gregory Tedji (RIP) and John Ndze and others started to campaign for their own church in town near the commercial area.
THE SEARCH FOR A PLOT OF LAND IN THE THREE CORNERS AREA.
Meanwhile the energetic and enterprising leading campaigners for a church in the Three Corners area had gone to late chief Ngung of Kesu and demanded for a piece of land for a Catholic Church. The chief of Kesu was not yielding to their demands but they were not giving up either and rather continued visiting the palace with wine every now and then for the same request.
In 1963 when Rev.Fr. Morphy replaced Rev Fr Arkkermans as Parish Priest chief Ngung coincidentally yielded to the incessant demand for a church plot near Three Corners by giving a plot on the present Baptist hill to the Catholic Christians who had been bringing wine to the palace in search of land for a church.
Just as the enthusiastic Catholic Christians set to clear the plot resentment arose from the Baptist Christians complained of the nearness of the Catholic Church to their own Church. The Catholic Christians abandoned the plot and went back to the chief of Kesu who then gave them a plot at the present Hausa quarter. Mesers John Ndze (RIP), Peter Iro Kalu, John Ewi (RIP) and Gregory Tedji started clearing the plot but realized it was too swampy and unsuitable for a church that was have a school as well. These determined Christians still took wine to the palace to give their complaint. This time around chief Ngung himself came out and finally the present piece of land where we have Holy Trinity Mission was allocated and work immediately started.
GROWTH OF HOLY TRINITY MISSION STATION WUM.
A request for a Catholic school for Holy Trinity Mission was approved in 1964 and the school took immediately thanks to late Pa Gregory Tedji who offered his house for the school the use as temporary site.
Rev. Fr. James Nielen (RIP) started a giant church building project in 1971 and when Rev. Anthony Jansen replaced Robert Oneil as Parish Priest in January 1973 he reduced the foundation and built moderate church for the teaming population of the stranger area. The Christians requested to worship in the church as soon as work was completed and by the 8th of February 1981 Archbishop Paul Verdzekov (RIP) established it as a Eucharistic Center with reason that it was to meet the spiritual and pastoral needs of the growing Wum town whose Priests and Christians had requested to have Holy Mass in the Holy Trinity chapel. There after it was not long when the Christians of Holy Trinity requested to have two
In 1985 the Christians requested for a bigger church house as the other one was already very small for teeming Christian population. Rev. Fr S. G Ten Horn welcome the idea and the foundation stone of the church was laid and work immediately started.
Besides when Fr. S. G Ten Horn was a very dynamic and smart Parish Priest. He foresaw the rapid expansion of Wum town, he looked for a trained and dynamic catechist John Geh and transferred him from Benakuma to Holy Trinity Mission that was growing in leaps and bounds to enhance the growth of the promising Mission station. Fr. SG Ten Horn acquired a Mission plot at Mile 50, Mbinjam from Chief of Kesu and another Mission plot at Naikom from the chief of Naikom St. Lawrence where St. Lawrence Catholic school was constructed and the school/church there was inaugurated on the 13/9/1985
In 1993 Fr. SG Ten Horn was transferred when he had just started raising the walls of the present Holy Trinity Church building.
When Fr. John Musi took over as Parish Priest from Fr. Ten Horn after a series of white Parish Priests the general feeling was that the new Rector did not have the capability and was therefore certainly not going to continue with the church project in Holy Trinity but Fr. John Musi surprised every body. He embraced the project as if he was the one who conceived the idea. He completed raising the walls roofed the building designed the Altar, put the floor equipped with standard pews and the church was inaugurated on the 10 of March 1996. He was greatly assisted in this project and other Parish projects by the collaborative Parish Pastoral Council chairman Mr Buh Protus Biame (1993 to 2000) currently Holy Trinity Quasi Parish projects chairman. Fr. John Musi is on record as the Parish Priest who made the greatest contribution to bring the Holy Trinity Church building to it's present level. Fr. John Musi is now retired and in residence in the Cathedral Parish Big Mankon.
In 1997 Fr. John Musi was transferred and was replaced by Rev. Fr. Joseph Ngah B who put the ceiling with ceiling boards that were already bought by Fr. John Musi just before he was transferred. Fr. Joseph Ngah B. drew the beautiful drawings on the Altar replacing the huge crucifix which Fr. John Musi had the Altar.
CREATION OF HOLY TRINITY MISSION STATION AS A QUASI PARISH.
In July 2008 during a Pastoral visit to St. Martin de Pores Parish Wum the Archbishop visited the Holy Trinity Mission station. In a welcome address the Mission station chairman requested for a Parish at Holy Trinity Mission. The Archbishop in response challenged the Christians of Holy Trinity Mission to build a Father's House and he will send them a Priest. Preparations for the construction of the presbytery started. A comprehensive plan of the envisaged infrastructure on mission land was to be drawn up by an architect first which took a while. In June 2013 Archbishop Cornilius Fontem Esua created Holy Trinity QUASI Parish Wum with Rev. Fr. Chrysanthus Tim as the pioneer Rector. He served deligently for one year and was transferred giving way to Rev. Fr. Francis Tche Ndeh M. The bell we are using today is thanks to Fr. Chrysanthus Tim. He was a Franck Priest passionate about good financial management and honest. For instance the bell donated by his friend abroad came when he was already on transfer but he found time to still bring it to Holy Trinity Quasi Parish Wum.
Fr. Francis Tche Ndeh M is on record as the Rector who started work on the presbytery project. He served for two years building the foundation and raising the walls of the presbytery and upon transfer in June 2016 was replaced by Rev. Fr. Francis Wam Ngong who came in as the third resident Rector. Fr. Francis Wam Ngong continued with the presbytery project at an accelerated rate but the peak period of the Anglophone crisis brought it to complete stop as the church was almost empty and one Mission station was completely closed down after a splinter group killed some of the Christians and burnt down some of the houses at Kecha village. Till today the Mission station remains closed. Fr. put finishing touches on raising of the walls of the ground floor of the presbytery project, before carrying out the decking of first floor, and he roofed the building. He completed the ancillary building as well and packed into that section as the first Rector to live in the presbytery. His financial management of the project money was simply excellent. He revamped the Parish project Committee and made sure things were properly done otherwise he will do it himself. The project Committee worked hard and collaborated with him and before he was transferred in 2020 the presbytery was almost set for internal finishing to begin.
